Loire Valley Garden Tour

If gardens are your passion, join the Académie des Arts de Vivre (AAV) on this enchanting Garden Tour through the Loire Valley. Its celebrated vineyards and rolling hills, dotted with more than a thousand castles, have earned it the sobriquet the “Garden of France” and designation as a World Heritage site.

Let our specialist guide open the gates for you to the most spectacular castle gardens, both classic and contemporary, and introduce you to their owners and head gardeners.

Begin your tour with the International Garden Festival at the Château de Chaumont, overlooking the River Loire, where nearly 30 cutting-edge designers, selected in an annual competition, offer their interpretation of a chosen garden theme.

Marvel at the fairytale Château de Chenonceau, spanning the River Cher and casting its reflections on the water. Discover magnificent floral arrangements made with flowers grown in the castle’s own remarkable gardens laid out for Diane de Poitiers and Queen Catherine de Medicis.

Discover one of the world’s most exquisite vegetable gardens, or potager, at the fabled Château de Villandry and learn about Renaissance garden design while strolling through its extensive terraces and hydraulic systems.

Find inspiration at the Château de Valmer, where the owner, a respected botanist and author, will explain how she preserves plant varieties and has restored her gardens to their original Italianate design. Be sure to sample the Vouvray wine made from grapes grown on the surrounding hillsides before leaving!

At the Château de la Bourdaisière, discover the National Tomato Conservancy with over 500 varieties! In the outdoor restaurant sample tomato dishes with a glass of the Montlouis sur Loire wine produced on the estate.

Encounter elves, ogres, giants, good fairies and fantastic topiary animals in the whimsical gardens of the Château du Rivau, a late medieval castle surrounded by contemporary gardens inspired by medieval tales and folklore.

Indulge your passion for horticulture and landscape design in this region long celebrated for its castles, gardens and wine. Visit the royal châteaux of Amboise, Chambord and Blois along with well-known wineries at Vouvray, Chinon and Bourgueil.

Here is the first report back on the tour – thank you for making it so successful: All very well, water on the coach each morning, superb weather, hotel with modern decor and clean and efficient; the visits have been really good with interaction with the owners and some of them real characters and very friendly. AAV in Paris has done us proud. Heather is charming and easy to get along with. Our driver is possibly the best I have ever had. Baie lekker!
