Tropical Gardens, Culture and History of Hawaii

 

Day 1. Arrive Oahu

Upon arrival, be met at the airport and transfer to your hotel at Waikiki Beach. Enjoy a Welcome Dinner at the hotel, known as the ‘Pink Palace’.

Day 2. Oahu Garden Visits

This morning, enjoy a scenic tour of Waikiki Beach and surrounding area, including a visit to the Pearl Harbour Visitor Centre. Next, visit Foster Botanical Garden, considered to be a living museum of tropical plants. Including some rare and endangered species, they have been collected from throughout the world’s tropics over a period of 150 years. We will then visit an exclusive private garden, not normally open to the public.

Day 3. Oahu to Kauai

Visit Queen Emma’s Summer Palace. Built in 1847, the restored and furnished home of Queen Emma and King Kamehameha IV offers a glimpse into the lifestyle of the Hawaiian monarchy. Fly to Kauai and visit the dramatically positioned Allerton Gardens. This garden paradise has been transformed through time by the hands of a Hawaiian Queen, by a sugar plantation magnate, and most significantly by an artist and an architect.

Day 4. Kauai Garden Visits

This morning, visit Limahuli Botanic Gardens. The garden features endemic Hawaiian species, plants introduced by the early Polynesian voyagers, as well as culturally important plants that were established during the plantation era starting in the mid-1800s, where the plant collections are used for the purposes of conservation, cultural perpetuation, and education. We then travel to the Waimea Canyon, which Mark Twain referred to it as the ‘Grand Canyon of the Pacific’. Waimea is Hawaiian for “reddish water”, a reference to the erosion of the canyon’s red soil. We will then visit a private garden, owned by a local garden enthusiast. In the evening, we visit Smith’s Tropical Paradise to wander the tropical gardens, dine on traditional cuisine and participate in a garden Luau.

Day 5. Kauai to Maui

Visit Na ‘Aina Kai, a diverse garden with a hardwood plantation, a moss and fern-covered canyon, with views over the pristine sandy beach. Enjoy a tour of the garden and discover the many sculptures. Later, fly to the island of Maui.

Day 6. Maui Garden Visits

Travel along the stunning road to Hana, old Hawaii. Here, we explore the natural pools of Oheo, Keanne Valley Lookout and Wainapanaga State Park. Visit Tedishi Winery to enjoy a historical tour of the gardens and winery. Visit the Rose Ranch, graced by towering 150-year-old trees brought back from Captain James Makee’s travels.

Day 7. Depart Maui

This morning we will visit a private garden. Afterwards, transfer to the airport for your flight to Oahu, where your tour concludes upon arrival.
